WHAT WE DO

Welcome to RICK'S PENS AND BOWLS.    I craft
ink pens and bowls out of any kind of wood that
can be turned on a lathe. Perhaps that 75 year
old oak tree your grandfather planted years ago
was blown down by a storm. Preserve the
memory by saving a piece of wood as small as
3/4"x3/4"x5”; that’s all I need to create a
splendid keepsake.   Unique mementos can be
crafted out of materials such as antler, acrylic,
solid surface countertops, corn cobs, etc.

Please take a moment to view the beautiful
wood bowls and vessels.   Segmented wood
bowls, many containing over 200 individual
pieces, are created by first diagramming the
overall pattern and then each individual
segment. Next, each segment must be
meticulously cut to the exact angle and
dimension before sanding and gluing each
piece together in preparation for turning.
Finally, the bowl is completed as if it had begun
as one solid piece of wood, resulting in a
beautiful and distinctive specimen.

Natural edge wood bowls retain a portion of the
actual tree bark, presenting an organically
magnificent representation of the entire tree.
Bowls fashioned from spalted or burled woods
are true representations of the marvels of
nature and each bowl is one of a kind.

A few of the pens that I have turned include
those made of deer antler, elk antler, snake
skin, corn cob, acrylic and numerous types of
wood, including ebony and segmented styles.
